April 30: Setting up a modern observability stack with Garland Technology, Corelight, and Humio

What is a Data Dead Zone?

How a lack of observability and missing data hurts your security

February 26th, 2020

Being protected in the digital age means having access to all your data and using it to detect intruders and crashes immediately when they happen.

But some traditional solutions fail to give access data until minutes after it comes in and may charge you too much to capture all of your data. If you’re using one of these, you may be trapped in a Data Dead Zone — a place where you don’t have all the data you need to answer your business or security questions.

If you’re using a SIEM or log management software that indexes your data, there’s a time period after an event occurs but before your system can update visualizations, trigger alerts, or perform a search. In an indexed system, it takes time (and hardware) to apply indexes, compress, and send to storage. In this Data Dead Zone, you may be helpless while your security is actively being compromised. If you’re trying to mount a security response, you’re effectively flying blind.

Humio eliminates this Data Dead Zone by providing real-time data searching results. While other solutions create delays, Humio treats your data as efficiently as possible, using an index-free system that keeps information in memory as long as possible, enabling searching as soon as the data streams in. Humio also features 5-15x compression of data, allowing you to store more and look further into historical data when you run searches.

Having a slow response time isn’t the only source of a Data Dead Zone. Systems that rely on indexing often have prohibitive costs for ingesting and storing data. Because of this, you might choose not to ingest some of your data in order to stay within budget. When a new question emerges that involves logs that you didn’t store, you aren’t able to find an answer because you simply don’t have the data. You have entered a Data Dead Zone.

Humio helps companies escape from this kind of Data Dead Zone as well. Humio’s low-cost fixed rates for data ingest enable you to log everything and be prepared for any novel questions that may come up in the future. Humio’s index-free architecture reduces demands on your hardware, reducing costs further, and enables customers to build a robust system that is ready for future traffic loads.
